A Note From The Principal

Dear MHMS Families,

The start of the 2018-2019 school year is just a few days away, and we at MHMS are eagerly anticipating filling our building with students.  There are a few important items that I wanted to share/remind our school community about; please take time to review all of this important information.

News From The Hill


Family File:  Family File is available for all HCPSS families to update information about their child/children for the 2018-2019 school year.  Please remember that Family File must be updated every school year.  HCPSS uses Family File for parents/guardians to complete emergency information.  Parents/guardians must verify and/or update information for each child, and can do so by logging into  Parents who have forgotten their login credentials for Family File may click the View instructions on resetting passwords.

Parents who are new to the Howard County Public School System will receive a welcome email with instructions to activate an account. (Please note- change of address may not be made through Family File.  If you have recently moved, please contact the school at 410-880-5897, as soon as possible).  Thank you to the over 180 MHMS families who have already completed their Family File for the 2018-2019 school year.  We are striving for 100% Family File completion by the first day of school on September 4th. 

6th Grade and New Student Orientation:  MHMS will host orientation for all 6th grade and new students on Thursday, August 30th from 1:00 -2:30 p.m.  Students and parents are encouraged to attend.  All incoming 6th grade students will be directed to their DEN (homeroom) classrooms and will spend the majority of their time meeting their teachers.   All incoming 6th grade parents, should report to the cafeteria for a parent presentation.  All new 7th and 8th grade students and parents should report to our Media Center for a presentation.  The Kona Ice vendor will be in our parking lot for anyone who would like to purchase a sweet treat as they leave orientation; profits from the Kona Ice sales will support our 6th grade Outdoor Education field trip.

The MHMS PTA will also be present during orientation, so please plan to visit their table and join the PTA this year, by completing the membership form and submitting the appropriate dues.  We appreciate you supporting our school in this way.

Also during Orientation, MHMS staff members will be available to collect 6th Grade Outdoor Education forms and payment.  We will also have computers available for those who wish to make their payment online, while they are here for orientation. 

6th Grade Outdoor Education:  Our 6th grade Outdoor Education trip to NorthBay will be Monday, October 8th - Wednesday, October 10th. Due to the early timing of the trip, forms are due by September 18, 2018. Attached you will find the information packet.  Completed forms can be turned in during 6th grade orientation, on Thursday, August 30th, or by students once they begin school. All students attending NorthBay must return the permission slip, the Health Information Form, and the Parent/Guardian Consent/Liability Release form. Students who are authorized to take medication during the school day, do not need to turn in extra forms. Students with medication needs outside of school day, will need a doctor to complete the Medication Authorization form. Payments can be made online by going to the MHMS website( Financial assistance is available, please contact the front office with any questions.

We will host a parent information session, with a representative from NorthBay, on Thursday, September 6th at 6:30 p.m., in the school cafeteria. All parents/guardians of 6th graders are encouraged to attend to learn more about our trip.

First Day of School:  The first day of school is Tuesday, September 4th.  Our doors open to students at 8:15 a.m.  If your student is a bus rider, it is strongly encouraged that they ride the bus to school on the first day of school.  Students need to be in their first class of the day by 8:25, or else they will be marked as “tardy to school.”  On the first day of school, there will be plenty of staff members to direct students to their first locations.  Any incoming 6th grader who attends the orientation on the 30th, will report to the homeroom classroom that they received during orientation, and follow the schedule that they received during orientation (please note another copy of the schedule will be available to all 6th graders on the first day of school).  All 7thand 8th grade students will receive their schedules on the first day, in their first classroom location.  Please note that if you have completed/updated your Family File information, you will have access to your child’s schedule, through Canvas, sometime between September 1st and 3rd.  

Updates to Student Email and G-Suite Accounts:  HCPSS students in grades 6-12 have had restricted Office 365 email and G-Suite accounts that only permitted sending to and receiving from other HCPSS accounts.  Beginning in the 2018-2019 school year, secondary students will have the ability to use their “” email account to send and receive email outside of HCPSS.  They will also have the ability to share items (Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Drive) from their G-Suite to outside HCPSS domains or non-HCPSS accounts.  School librarians will include information and lessons about these changes during media orientation at the beginning of the school year.  Students will learn how to access the email account, share and send information safely to users outside HCPSS, and maintain password security.  

Back To School Night:  Back to School Night is scheduled for Thursday, September 13th at 6:30 p.m. This evening is intended for parents only, and will give parents the opportunity to meet teachers and visit classrooms.  More information will be shared at a later time.  

School Bus Information:  Bus information is currently accessible on the www.hcpss.orgwebsite.  To access your specific bus stop information, use this link, and enter your address.  We ask for patience during the first weeks of school, as bus driver’s progress towards navigating their routes efficiently.  Please remember that the bus times are approximations, and it is always recommended to arrive at your stop earlier than the designated time.
