News From The Hill

School News

MHMS Winer Bazaar:  The Winter Bazaar is in need of your donated items!  The Winter Bazaar is a small store filled with items that students can purchase using their Gotcha’s.  Donated items include, but are not limited to, books, candles, jewelry, games, household items, decorative items, baby items, toys, movies, CDs, etc.  Items can be new or gently used.  The success of the event is dependent on donations; anything you can donate would be appreciated!  Students really enjoy being able to “purchase” these items for their friends and family.  All donations can be dropped off in the front office, or Ms. Hodder’s classroom (room 106).  We will begin collecting items on November 1st and will accept donations through the month of November.  If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Behrens (laura_behrens@hcpss.org).  Thanks for your support.

Yankee Candle Fundraiser:  If you did not have the opportunity to place a paper order for our Yankee Candle Fundraiser, online orders will be accepted through January, and MHMS will still receive 40% profit for all online sales.  Please consider supporting the MHMS Yankee Candle Fundraiser by visiting https://www.yankeecandlefundraising.com/store.htm.  We thank you in advance for your support.  See the attached for online sales:  MHMSYankeeCandleOnllineOrdering.pdf

Yearbook Sales:  MHMS Memory Books are on sale now!  Flyers were sent home with students, so that you can secure your copy of the 2018-2019 school year!  Orders can also be submitted online through ybpay.lifetouch.com using Yearbook ID Code 13198619.

7th Grade News

7th Grade Field Trip:  All 7th grader students received permission slips for our English theater field trip to Goucher College.  Students will see the Chamber Theater Production Company perform several stories read in ELA class, including works by Edgar Allan Poe.  The field trip is scheduled for Wednesday, December 12th,  during regular school hours.  The cost is $27.00 per person and payment can be made with cash, check to MHMS or online payment athttps://osp.osmsinc.com/HowardMD/.  We are looking for chaperones so please check the box on the permission slip if interested.  Chaperones will be selected by lottery, please wait to be contacted before including additional chaperone payment.  Please contact your child's ELA teacher with any questions.  All signed permission slips and payment are due by Friday, November 16.

8th Grade News

8th Grade Field Trip:  The 8th grade field trip to the Newseum is scheduled for Friday, November 16th (the Friday before Thanksgiving Break).  This is an extended day trip, so students will need to arrive to school at our regular entry time of 8:15, but will need to be picked up at approximately 4:00 p.m. If your student is going home with someone other than their own parent/guardian, please send a note to Ms. Schaefer.  Students should plan to bring a bag lunch for the field trip.  If a student needs a bag lunch provided by our cafeteria, please inform Ms. Schaefer by Monday, November 12th.  Ms. Schaefer can be emailed atmolly_schaefer@hcpss.org.

MHMS PTA Book Fair:  Did you know? Reading just 20 minutes a day exposes your child to about 1.8 million words per year. Reading helps students develop a stronger vocabulary, and in addition, students who read for pleasure average higher grades in English, mathematics, science, and history!

Mark your calendar to join us for a celebration of reading!  The PTA Book Fair hours are as follows:

  • Friday, 11/16: 11:00 am – 1:30 pm (lunch)
  • Monday & Tuesday, 11/19-11/20:   9:30am-11:30am (lunch) and 1pm-8pm (conferences)
