A Note From The Principal

Dear MHMS Families,

At the beginning of this week an administrative decision was made to temporarily close a select number of student bathrooms located throughout the school.  In the recent weeks, we have found that, unfortunately, students have not been treating the facilities in a respectful manner.  I recognize that some are aware that, most recently we found inappropriate graffiti written on one of the stalls in one of our bathrooms.  The language used in the message did cause us to engage in an investigation and seek the assistance of support outside of our building, including contacting the School Management and Instructional Leadership office, the HCPSS Office of Safety and Security, and HCPD.  Through our investigation, we have determined that there is no credible safety concern at this time.  By closing the bathrooms, MHMS staff are more easily able to monitor each of the open facilities.  This is not a permanent situation, and as long as students continue to be responsible and respectful of our facilities as they have been during this week, I anticipate that all bathrooms will re-open in the near future.  Please know that we will continue to follow up on each and every report and concern that is brought to our attention.  We commit to staying vigilant, and we need the help of our entire school community to aid us in providing a safe environment for all.  As Dr. Martirano has asked us all to do, I will continue to urge students and families to embrace the mantra of “see something, say something.”  We all have a responsibility to keep one another informed for the sake of safety for all.

I would like to send out KUDO’s to our students and staff.  Today, I had the opportunity to witness, for my first time, the Annual Murray Hill Middle School Talent Show.  The talent that students displayed through song, dance, and acrobatics was phenomenal.  I congratulate all of these brave students for performing in front of the entire student body and a large number of parents!  I would also like to send congratulations to the MHMS Choral groups, who attended their choral assessments this week.  Their performances were amazing, and it is true testament to the hard-work and dedication that they have exhibited throughout this school year.

We hope to see a great crowd this evening for the Music Boosters Gift Card Bingo.  It promises to be fun for the entire family.  Please see the attached flyer for more detailed information.  Bingo.jpeg

Finally, if you did not turn in your Yankee Candle Fundraiser Orders, the absolute last day that we can accept orders will be on Monday, April 16th.  Orders should arrive before Mother’s Day!  Please be sure to turn in any outstanding orders to the front office.

Sincerely,

Lisa R. Smithson
