A Note From The Principal

Dear MHMS Families,

On Friday, our band students had the opportunity to enjoy an amazing performance by The Chesapeake Saxophone Ensemble during an in-house field trip.  Thank you to Ms. Hersey for setting up this great experience for our students.

Thank you to all of the families who donated and volunteered for our Fall Fling event.  Fall Fling is a fun way for our students to get to know one another and engage in our MHMS community.

Next week is SPIRIT WEEK!!!!  We are looking forward to all of our MHMS students (and staff) participating in SPIRIT WEEK next week.  Spirit Days are as follows:

Monday: Sports/Jersey Day

Tuesday: Twin Day

Wednesday: Pink Out

Thursday: Wacky Tacky Day

Friday: PJ Day

At this time 73% of families have completed Family File (that’s an 9% increase from last week), through HCPSS Connect.  Your Family File must be updated and verified at the start of each school year.  Among other things, Family File provides MHMS with contact information, emergency contact information, health information, and different preferences which helps us to ensure the safety of your student.  Please visit https://www.hcpss.org/connect/ to complete/verify your Family File today.

Sincerely,

Lisa R. Smithson

School News

Did You Know???:  Did you know that it is not too late to join the MHMS PTA?  The MHMS PTA supports our school community by donating to many of our school events, providing scholarships for for field trips, assisting with cultural arts experiences for our students, and showing appreciation to the staff throughout the year.  Your membership is needed and valued, and directly impacts what the MHMS PTA can do for our students.  If you have not done so already, please visit the MHMS PTA website, and join today:  https://mhms.ptboard.com/home

Vision and Hearing Screening:  Vision and Hearing Screening will take place on October 29th.  All 8th grade students will participate in the screening.  Please review the attached information, that was sent home with your student earlier this week.

Memory Book Cover Contest:  The Memory Book team is sponsoring a cover contest!  We are looking for students to use their creativity and artistic skills to create a front and back cover for our 2019-2020 Memory Book.  The cover should be colorful, an expression of MHMS pride, and include 2019-2020. Color should go to the edge of the paper, but words and drawings should stay about an inch away from the edge of the paper to ensure they don’t get cut off.  All students are welcome (and encouraged) to enter.  The winning cover will receive a free Memory Book!  All entries are due to Ms. Behrens (room 214) by November 12th.  See the attachment for all the specifics as well as the winning covers for the last three years.   Memory Book Cover Contest Information 2019-2020.pdf

Young Author’s Contest:  Please encourage your student to enter the 2019-20120 Literacy Council Young Authors’ Contest!  Entries are due to Ms. Burnett by October 31st.  Entries must be Word Documents (the coversheet can be a pdf); all must submitted via email to April_Burnett@hcpss.org.  Please see the attached documents for detailed information:  Young Authors Contest Announcement MHMS 2019.pdf   Young Authors Student Coversheet MHMS 2019-20.pdf

Winter Bazaar:  The Winter Bazaar is coming back and is in need of your donated items! The Winter Bazaar is a small store filled with items that students can purchase using their Gotcha’s.  Items can include books, candles, jewelry, games, household items, decorative items, baby items, toys, movies, CDs, etc.  Anything you can donate would be appreciated!  Students really enjoy being able to purchase these items for their friends and family. We will begin collections on November 4th and will accept donations through the month of November. Donations can be dropped off in Ms. Hodder’s classroom (Room 106) or brought in with your student and they can drop them off in Ms. Hodder’s classroom.

Winter Bazaar will run during the three lunch shifts each day during December 9th-12th.  We would love to have parent volunteers sign up to help supervise this event.  A sign-up genius will come out as we get closer to the event, so be on the lookout.  It’s a lot of fun to watch students shop for their loved ones and see their excitement each day as they browse the new items placed out!  Volunteers will be needed to work as “cashiers” for the Bazaar and to help regulate the number of students allowed in at a time.

If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Behrens (laura_behrens@hcpss.org).
