As an educator in the Howard County Public School System for over 20 years, I am excited to enter into my second year as the Principal of Murray Hill Middle School. I am a product of Howard County Public Schools as I attended Talbott Springs Elementary, Clarksville Middle School, Harper’s Choice Middle School, and I am a proud graduate of Wilde Lake High School. I attended Howard University, in Washington, D.C., where I earned a B.A. in English and my Masters of Education. I am committed to providing an engaging academic environment for all students and building a school community in which the well-being of each and every one of our students is consistently the priority. I will continue to collaborate with the MHMS staff to provide our students with challenging and rigorous academics, as well as meaningful experiences to enrich their growth and development. I look forward to all of the staff and students at MHMS stretching themselves to achieve their ultimate potential. Please note, that I can be contacted at lisa_smithson@hcpss.org. The core of who I am as an educator/administrator is that I have a passion to make a difference in the way young people feel about themselves and to provide opportunities that will put them on a path to not only be a productive citizen, but also allow them to live a life that makes them feel fulfilled. My educational background is as follows: Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education at Bowie State University, Masters of Art in Reading Education at The Ohio State University, and Graduate Certificate in School Administration and Supervision at Johns Hopkins University. I began my teaching career in Worcester and Wicomico County Public Schools on the eastern shore of Maryland, where I was born and raised. There, I taught all core subjects from elementary to middle school grades. Later, my husband, our three children, and I moved to Howard County where I taught English/language arts and was a reading specialist at the middle school level. All of my children are graduates of Howard County Public Schools. Since 2011, I have been the Assistant Principal of Murray Hill Middle School. As I enter my 27th year as an educator, I continue to look forward to a new school year - a chance to better serve the students, staff, and community of The Hill.

I am excited to begin my first year here at Murray Hill Middle. This is my 21st year working with middle school students and my fourth year as an Assistant Principal. I have taught 6th, 7th, and 8th grade Math and Engineering in Howard County, Montgomery County, and in Kentucky. My degrees are in Middle School Education, Technology in Education, and Administration and Supervision. I have high expectations for the scholars at Murray Hill Middle School and I look forward to working with all students and their families to make sure our children excel in their learning! I remind students daily that they can "Make it a great day or not, the choice is yours!" When I am not at school you can find me baking, reading, or helping my husband shuttle our two middle school children around to their various activities. My door is always open, please stop by anytime to chat. I look forward to seeing and meeting each of you!
